However, the environment within a church, mosque, synagogue, or temple presents unique challenges that standard indoor displays cannot always handle. From humidity in baptisteries to dust in multipurpose halls and condensation in unheated chapels, the wrong display can fail prematurely. This is where the Ingress Protection (IP) rating becomes a decisive specification. The IP rating defines how well an LED display resists intrusion from solid objects and moisture. For houses of worship, understanding IP ratings ensures that the investment in a visual ministry system is protected against the specific conditions of the installation site. A display with an inadequate IP rating may suffer from corrosion, pixel failure, or electrical shorts, leading to costly repairs and service interruptions during services.

The power draw for an IP65 outdoor screen is significantly higher, often 600 to 1000 watts per square meter at peak brightness, due to the need for high-brightness LEDs and active cooling fans. Additionally, the cabinet construction must include rubber gaskets, sealed connectors, and corrosion-resistant materials to maintain the IP rating over years of exposure to rain, snow, and temperature swings.

For a sanctuary where the congregation sits close to the screen, a fine-pitch display with an IP20 rating is ideal because it allows for a seamless, high-resolution image with a pixel pitch as low as 0.9 mm. In contrast, an outdoor drive-in service screen with an IP65 rating and a 6 mm pixel pitch offers sufficient resolution for viewers at 15 meters or more. The brightness must also be carefully calibrated: too high in an indoor setting causes eye strain, while too low outdoors renders the content invisible. A typical indoor brightness of 1200 nits is comfortable, while outdoor screens require 5000 nits or more.
The IP rating also influences installation complexity and long-term maintenance. An indoor IP20 display can be installed with standard rigging and requires minimal sealing around cables. However, an outdoor IP65 display demands weatherproof cable entry points, drainage systems for condensation, and surge protection for power and data lines. Houses of worship should plan for regular maintenance intervals to inspect gaskets, seals, and fan filters. A degraded seal can compromise the IP rating and lead to moisture damage. For example, a church with a waterfront location or high humidity should prioritize an IP54 or IP65 rating even for indoor installations near entryways. The resolution and pixel pitch also determine viewing distance: a 2.5 mm pitch display is suitable for viewing distances of 2.5 meters or more, while a 10 mm pitch requires at least 10 meters. Power draw must be factored into the electrical load calculation. A large outdoor screen measuring 4 meters by 3 meters with a pixel pitch of 6 mm and brightness of 6000 nits can draw over 12 kilowatts at peak, necessitating dedicated circuits and possibly a cooling system. By carefully matching the IP rating to the specific environmental conditions of the worship space, religious organizations can ensure reliable, long-lasting performance that enhances the worship experience without unexpected failures or costly downtime.
