Trade shows present a distinct set of challenges for display technology. The environment is typically a high-ambient-light convention hall with uncontrolled overhead lighting, often exceeding 1000 lux. Viewing distances are variable, ranging from a few feet for close inspection to dozens of feet for a pass-through audience. A display must be bright enough to cut through glare, robust enough to survive repeated packing and shipping, and visually sharp to draw attention from a distance. This is where Chip-on-Board (COB) LED technology offers a significant advantage over traditional Surface-Mount Device (SMD) displays. COB technology encapsulates thousands of LED chips directly onto a substrate with a protective resin layer, creating a flat, seamless surface that is far more resistant to impact, moisture, and dust. For a trade show application, this ruggedness translates directly into lower total cost of ownership, as displays are less likely to suffer dead pixels or damage from accidental bumps during installation and dismantling.
The pixel pitch, measured in millimeters (mm), is the single most critical specification for a trade show COB display. It determines the minimum viewing distance at which the image appears seamless and the maximum distance from which the content remains readable. For a standard trade show booth where attendees may stand as close as 1.5 to 3 meters (5 to 10 feet) from the screen, a pixel pitch between P1.2 and P1.9 is generally ideal. A P1.2 display, with a pixel density of approximately 694,444 pixels per square meter, delivers exceptionally crisp text and fine detail at close range, making it suitable for product demonstrations and interactive kiosks. A P1.9 display, with about 277,000 pixels per square meter, offers a better balance between resolution and cost for larger screens viewed from 2.5 meters or more. For massive video walls designed to be seen from across the exhibition hall (5 meters or more), a P2.5 or even P3.9 pitch may suffice, but for the typical 3-meter-wide booth, a P1.5 or P1.6 pitch provides the sweet spot of high resolution without unnecessary expense. Always calculate the required resolution based on your content: for 4K content (3840 x 2160 pixels), a P1.2 display would need to be approximately 4.6 meters wide, while a P1.9 display would need to be 7.3 meters wide to achieve the same pixel count.
Brightness is measured in nits (candelas per square meter) and is a non-negotiable factor for trade show success. Standard indoor LED displays typically offer 600 to 800 nits, but for convention centers with aggressive overhead lighting, a COB display should deliver a minimum of 1000 nits, with 1200 to 1500 nits being preferable. However, raw brightness is only half the equation. High contrast ratio is what makes the image pop. COB technology inherently provides superior contrast compared to SMD because the black encapsulation material between the chips absorbs ambient light rather than reflecting it. This results in a contrast ratio that can exceed 10,000:1 in a dark room and remains highly effective even under 1500 lux of ambient light. For trade shows, look for a display that combines high brightness with a matte, anti-glare surface finish. This finish, common on premium COB panels, diffuses direct light from overhead fixtures, preventing distracting reflections and ensuring that dark areas of the image remain deep and detailed. A display with 1500 nits brightness and a matte COB surface will outperform a 2000-nit SMD display with a glossy surface in a typical trade show setting.
While pixel pitch and brightness attract attention, the technical quality of the image determines whether a viewer stays engaged. The refresh rate, measured in Hertz (Hz), should be at least 3840 Hz for trade show use. This high refresh rate eliminates flicker when captured on camera, which is essential for live streaming or recording presentations. It also ensures smooth motion reproduction for video content, preventing judder or ghosting. Color accuracy is equally critical. Look for a display with a color temperature range from 3200K to 9300K and a color gamut that covers at least 90% of the DCI-P3 color space. High-quality COB displays use calibrated RGB chips with 16-bit or higher gray scale processing, which allows for smooth, band-free gradients in shadows and highlights. This is particularly important for trade show content that features corporate logos, fine text, or high-contrast product images. A display with poor gray scale will show visible steps in color transitions, which can appear unprofessional. Ensure the manufacturer provides factory calibration data for color uniformity and white balance across the entire screen.
The physical resilience of a COB display is a major selling point for trade shows, which involve frequent assembly, disassembly, and transport. The Ingress Protection (IP) rating is a key indicator of durability. For a COB display, look for an IP rating of at least IP54 on the front side. IP54 means the display is protected against dust ingress (level 5) and splashing water from any direction (level 4). This level of protection is sufficient for accidental drink spills, dust from carpeted convention floors, and cleaning with a damp cloth. The rear of the display, which contains power supplies and signal boards, should have an IP20 rating or higher to prevent accidental contact. Thermal management is another crucial factor. COB displays generate heat concentrated in a small area, so effective cooling is required to prevent color drift and extend LED lifespan. High-quality panels use passive heat sinks combined with low-noise, temperature-controlled fans. A well-designed COB display will have a power draw of approximately 150 to 250 watts per square meter at maximum brightness, with a standby power consumption of less than 10 watts. Lower power draw not only reduces electricity costs at the show but also indicates more efficient LED chips and better thermal design.
The physical cabinet design determines how easily and safely a display can be set up in a trade show booth. For maximum flexibility, choose a cabinet that is front-serviceable. This means all connections, power supplies, and receiving cards can be accessed from the front of the display, allowing the screen to be mounted flush against a wall or stacked in a tower configuration without rear access. Cabinet weight is also critical: each cabinet should ideally weigh less than 10 kilograms (22 pounds) for a single technician to handle safely. Standard cabinet sizes for trade shows are 500 mm x 500 mm or 600 mm x 337.5 mm, which allow for modular builds of various aspect ratios. Look for a quick-lock mechanism that requires no tools for alignment and connection, reducing setup time from hours to minutes. For curved or irregular booth designs, ensure the cabinets allow for a minimum of +/- 5 degrees of curvature adjustment. Finally, verify that the display supports standard video inputs such as HDMI 2.0, DisplayPort, and 12G-SDI for 4K content at 60 Hz. A built-in video processor that can handle seamless scaling and bezel compensation is a valuable feature, ensuring that the entire video wall behaves as a single, unified screen without visible seams between cabinets.
