For restaurant applications, the fundamental structural difference is critical. In a COB display, individual LED chips are directly bonded to a substrate and then encapsulated in a single, continuous protective layer of epoxy or resin. This creates a seamless, flat surface that is highly resistant to moisture, dust, and physical impact. For a busy restaurant, this means a display that can withstand the inevitable splashes from cleaning solutions, kitchen grease, and accidental bumps from serving carts or patrons. Unlike SMD panels, which have exposed solder joints and individual lenses that can collect debris, a COB panel offers a smooth surface that is easily wiped clean. The technology also allows for a higher pixel density within a smaller area, enabling finer details and smoother images at closer viewing distances—an essential factor for diners seated just a few meters away.
The pixel pitch, measured in millimeters, is the distance between the center of one pixel and the next. For restaurant installations, the choice of pixel pitch directly determines the optimal viewing distance and the perceived image quality. For a high-end dining establishment where tables are close to the display, a pixel pitch of 1.2mm to 1.5mm is recommended. This allows diners seated 1.5 to 2.5 meters away to see crisp, detailed menus or atmospheric content without visible pixelation. For larger venues, such as sports bars or banquet halls, where viewing distances range from 3 to 8 meters, a pixel pitch of 1.9mm to 2.5mm is more cost-effective while still delivering excellent clarity. Resolution is equally important; a full HD (1920 x 1080) COB display for a standard menu board requires a cabinet size of approximately 1200mm x 675mm at a 1.5mm pitch. For 4K resolution (3840 x 2160), which is ideal for showing high-definition food photography or dynamic video walls, the same pixel pitch would require a larger area, typically 2400mm x 1350mm. Always calculate the required resolution based on the smallest viewing distance in your restaurant to ensure text remains sharp and legible.
Restaurant lighting varies dramatically, from dim, romantic settings to bright, sunlit cafes. COB displays excel in these diverse conditions due to their superior black levels and contrast ratios. A typical COB panel for indoor restaurant use should have a brightness of 600 to 800 nits. This is sufficient to overcome ambient light from pendant lamps or windows without being uncomfortably bright for nearby diners. The black surface of a COB module absorbs ambient light, achieving a contrast ratio of 5000:1 or higher. This means deep blacks and vibrant colors, making food images look appetizing and text highly readable. For outdoor patios or semi-covered terraces, you will need a higher brightness, typically 1500 to 2500 nits, to combat direct sunlight. However, for most indoor restaurant applications, 800 nits is the sweet spot, balancing energy efficiency with visual impact. The refresh rate should be at least 1920Hz to eliminate flicker, which is especially important for video content and for diners who may be sensitive to screen strobing. A higher refresh rate, such as 3840Hz, is recommended for high-speed content or when using cameras for social media content.
Power efficiency is a key operational cost for restaurant owners. A typical COB LED display consumes approximately 100 to 150 watts per square meter at maximum brightness, though this can drop to 30 to 50 watts per square meter when displaying typical menu content with significant dark areas. For a 2-meter by 1-meter display, expect a peak power draw of 200 to 300 watts, comparable to a few modern light bulbs. Heat management is critical in a restaurant environment where kitchen equipment already raises ambient temperatures. COB technology operates at a lower junction temperature than SMD due to better thermal conductivity from the chip directly to the substrate. However, you must still ensure adequate ventilation behind the display. A gap of at least 10 to 15 centimeters between the back of the panel and the wall is recommended for natural convection cooling. For structural installation, the mounting frame must be rated to support the weight of the cabinets, which is typically 5 to 8 kilograms per cabinet. Use a steel or aluminum truss system that is securely anchored to a concrete wall or structural beam. For ceiling-mounted displays, ensure the drop ceiling grid is reinforced or that the mount is attached directly to the building structure above.
In a restaurant, the display faces constant exposure to airborne grease, steam, cleaning chemicals, and temperature fluctuations. COB displays offer superior ingress protection. Most indoor COB panels come with an IP40 rating on the front, meaning they are protected against solid objects larger than 1mm and limited dust ingress. However, the critical advantage is the IP54 or even IP65 rating on the front of the module itself, achieved through the solid encapsulation. This means the LED chips and circuitry are completely sealed against water jets and dust. The back of the display is typically IP30, so care must be taken during cleaning to avoid spraying water directly into the rear vents. For a kitchen display or a drive-thru menu board, a fully sealed COB panel with an IP65 rating on both front and back is available. This allows for direct pressure washing without damage. The durability also extends to shock resistance; COB panels can typically withstand an IK06 or IK07 impact rating, making them resistant to accidental knocks from trays or cleaning equipment. Always verify the IP rating of the specific model you are purchasing, as not all COB panels are created equal.
An effective restaurant display requires a robust content management system (CMS) that is easy for non-technical staff to use. The display should support standard video inputs such as HDMI, DisplayPort, and USB-C for direct connection to a media player or a dedicated Android or Linux-based system-on-chip (SoC) built into the cabinet. For multi-screen video walls, ensure the display supports daisy-chaining via Ethernet or fiber optic cables for 4K or 8K content distribution. The CMS should allow for scheduling—for example, displaying breakfast menus from 6 AM to 11 AM, lunch specials from 11 AM to 4 PM, and dinner promotions from 4 PM to close. It should also support real-time updates for daily specials or pricing changes. For operational reliability, the display should have a built-in automatic brightness sensor that adjusts the screen output based on ambient light levels, saving power and reducing eye strain. A failover feature is also valuable: if the primary signal is lost, the display should automatically switch to a backup stored image or a pre-loaded loop of content. Daily operation involves simply turning the display on and off via a timer or a central control system. The sealed COB surface requires only occasional cleaning with a soft, dry microfiber cloth to remove fingerprints or dust, avoiding any liquid cleaners that could seep into the edges.
