Inspect the power connectors and signal cables for compatibility; most COB systems use RJ45 or fiber optic cables for data transmission, and power cables with locking connectors to prevent accidental disconnection. Document the serial numbers of all cabinets and modules for warranty and maintenance tracking. Store the modules in a dry, clean area away from direct sunlight until installation begins.

Mounting the Steel Framework and Support Structure

The steel framework is the backbone of the COB LED billboard installation. Use galvanized steel beams with a minimum thickness of 3 millimeters to prevent corrosion over the display’s lifespan, which can exceed 100,000 hours. The framework must be level and plumb within 2 millimeters over the entire display area to ensure seamless alignment of the cabinets. Attach the framework to the building structure using expansion bolts or chemical anchors rated for the load. For a billboard measuring 10 meters wide by 5 meters tall, install horizontal beams at intervals of 1 meter and vertical supports every 1.2 meters. Weld or bolt all joints securely, and apply anti-corrosion paint to any exposed metal. If any cabinet shows dead pixels or color deviation, replace it immediately. Seal all cabinet gaps with silicone gaskets to maintain the IP65 rating on the front side.

Connecting Power, Data, and Control Systems

After mechanical installation, connect the electrical and data systems. The power supply for each cabinet must be wired in parallel from the main distribution unit. For a 50-square-meter display with 10mm pixel pitch, the total power draw at full brightness is approximately 30,000 to 40,000 watts. Use a three-phase power supply to balance the load across phases. Install a programmable logic controller (PLC) to manage the display’s power-on sequence and to monitor temperature and humidity inside the cabinets. The data connection typically uses a fiber optic cable from the control room to a receiving card in the first cabinet, then daisy-chains through the remaining cabinets. The signal controller must support a refresh rate of 1,920 Hz and a color depth of 16 bits per channel for smooth gradients. Configure the control software to set the brightness automatically based on ambient light sensors, which is essential for reducing power consumption at night. For outdoor billboards, the display should dim to 1,000 nits after sunset to avoid glare. Also, set the content management system to update the billboard content remotely via a 4G or wired Ethernet connection. Test the system by playing a full-color video at 30 frames per second to ensure no latency or flickering. Verify that the power consumption matches the calculated values and that all cabinets receive a stable voltage within 5% of the rated value.

Final Testing, Weatherproofing, and Maintenance Considerations

Conduct a comprehensive final test before declaring the installation complete. Measure the display’s brightness with a lux meter at a distance of 10 meters; it should match the specification of 6,000 nits for daytime use. Check the color uniformity using a spectrometer to ensure a delta E value below 3, which indicates consistent color across the screen. Test the IP rating by spraying water on the front of the display at a pressure of 30 psi from a distance of 3 meters; no water should enter the cabinets. Inspect all cable entries and gaskets for proper sealing. Apply a silicone sealant around the edges of the display where it meets the framework. For maintenance, document the power draw per cabinet and the total power consumption for future reference. Schedule a quarterly inspection to clean the front surface with a soft brush and check for any loose connections. The COB technology’s higher reliability reduces the need for frequent repairs, but it is still important to have spare modules on hand. Store spare cabinets in a climate-controlled environment. Finally, provide the client with a user manual that includes the display’s technical specifications, such as pixel pitch, resolution, brightness, refresh rate, IP rating, and viewing distance, along with emergency shutdown procedures. With proper installation and maintenance, a COB LED billboard can operate reliably for over 10 years in outdoor environments.
