LED display in volcanic ash environment

Volcanic ash presents a uniquely destructive threat to LED display equipment, combining abrasive, corrosive, and electrically conductive properties that can cause rapid and severe damage. Unlike mineral sand, volcanic ash particles are irregularly shaped with sharp edges that scratch optical surfaces more aggressively, and their chemical composition includes sulfuric compounds that corrode metals and degrade rubber seals. When volcanic ash becomes wet, it forms a conductive paste that can cause short circuits on exposed electrical components. LED displays in volcanically active regions, such as parts of Indonesia, the Philippines, Iceland, and the Pacific Ring of Fire, should be designed with protective features that allow rapid sealing of ventilation openings when ash fall is detected.
