Selecting the Optimal Pixel Pitch and Viewing Distance

For a venue where the closest spectator is 10 meters from the screen, a 10 mm pixel pitch is adequate, offering a resolution of approximately 10,000 pixels per square meter. For closer viewing distances of 5 meters, a 6 mm pitch is necessary to avoid visible pixelation. The recommended formula is: minimum viewing distance (in meters) equals pixel pitch (in mm) multiplied by 1000, divided by 3.4. Mounting Systems and Thermal Management

The mounting structure must accommodate the GOB panels’ unique characteristics. GOB modules have a flat, smooth surface that is more rigid than standard SMD modules, allowing for slightly tighter installation tolerances. A curved installation is possible, but the minimum curvature radius for a 10 mm pitch GOB display is typically 8 meters; for a 6 mm pitch, it is 5 meters. The mounting frame should be constructed from galvanized steel or aluminum to prevent corrosion. The panels are attached using a front-serviceable locking system, which is essential for arena displays where rear access may be blocked by structural supports. Each panel must be aligned within 1 mm vertical and horizontal tolerance to prevent visible seams. Thermal management is critical: GOB panels generate heat, and the glue layer acts as an insulator, so active cooling is required. A fan system with a minimum airflow of 2 cubic meters per minute per square meter is recommended. The ambient operating temperature range for GOB displays is -20°C to +60°C, but direct sunlight on a dark surface can raise panel temperature by 20°C. Cabling, Signal Distribution, and Redundancy

Signal integrity is paramount in a sports arena where latency and dropouts are unacceptable. The video signal should be transmitted via fiber optic cable for distances over 50 meters to avoid signal degradation. For shorter runs, CAT6a cable with shielded connectors is sufficient. The signal distribution system must support a resolution of at least 1920 x 1080 pixels at a refresh rate of 60 Hz. The viewing angle test should confirm that at 160 degrees, the color shift is less than 10% delta E. The contrast ratio of a GOB display is typically 5,000:1 in a dark environment, but in an arena with floodlights, the effective contrast ratio drops to 2,000:1. To compensate, the black level of the GOB layer is deeper than standard SMD, improving perceived contrast. The final calibration data is stored in each panel’s memory, so if a panel is replaced, it automatically loads the correct settings.

Final Testing, Safety Compliance, and Maintenance Protocols

Before the arena opens, a comprehensive 48-hour burn-in test at full brightness is required. During this test, the display must operate without any pixel failures or overheating. The temperature of each panel should be monitored; the maximum allowable temperature is 70°C on the rear surface. Safety compliance includes adherence to CE, UL, or equivalent standards. The display must pass a flammability test (UL 94 V-0 rating for the housing). The GOB layer itself is self-extinguishing and does not emit toxic fumes. The maintenance protocol includes monthly cleaning with a soft microfiber cloth and isopropyl alcohol (70% concentration) to remove dust and grime. The GOB surface is scratch-resistant, but abrasive cleaners must be avoided. Every six months, the mounting bolts should be retorqued to the manufacturer’s specification. The power consumption should be logged to detect any abnormal increases that indicate failing power supplies. The expected lifespan of a GOB LED display in an arena environment is 100,000 hours to half-brightness, which is approximately 11 years of 24/7 operation. Spare panels (at least 5% of total) should be kept in a climate-controlled storage room. The installation team must provide a detailed report including the final pixel pitch, brightness, refresh rate, power draw, and calibration data. This report serves as the baseline for future maintenance and warranty claims. With proper installation and care, a GOB LED display will deliver exceptional visual performance for years of sports events.
