In an LED display system, the cabinet (also called a cabinet unit) is the standardized structural unit positioned between the LED module and the complete screen. Calculating cabinet quantity is one of the most important steps in project quotation, structural design, and installation planning.

Note:
The symbol ⌈x⌉ means rounding up because cabinets cannot be divided into partial units.
| Cabinet Type | Typical Size | Common Pixel Pitch | Typical Applications |
|---|---|---|---|
| Die-cast aluminum cabinet | 500 × 500 mm / 500 × 1000 mm | P2.6 / P2.9 / P3.9 | Rental displays, stage screens |
| Die-cast aluminum cabinet | 640 × 480 mm | P1.5 / P1.8 / P2 / P2.5 | Fine-pitch fixed installations |
| Steel cabinet | 960 × 960 mm | P4 / P5 / P6 / P8 / P10 | Outdoor fixed LED billboards |
| Steel cabinet | 768 × 768 mm | P3 / P4 / P5 | Outdoor and semi-outdoor displays |
| Lightweight/simple cabinet | 480 × 480 mm / 512 × 512 mm | P2.5 / P3 / P4 | Creative and irregular LED displays |
Build a 6 m × 4 m outdoor P5 advertising LED screen.
So each cabinet contains:
Therefore:
Therefore:
So the project requires:
So the final installed screen size becomes:
The final screen is therefore larger than the original target dimensions.

Each cabinet contains a fixed number of LED modules.
| Cabinet Size | Module Size | Horizontal Modules | Vertical Modules | Total Modules per Cabinet |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 960 × 960 mm | 320 × 160 mm | 3 | 6 | 18 |
| 640 × 480 mm | 320 × 160 mm | 2 | 3 | 6 |
| 500 × 500 mm | 250 × 250 mm | 2 | 2 | 4 |
| 500 × 1000 mm | 250 × 250 mm | 2 | 4 | 8 |
Using the previous example:
Therefore, the complete LED display requires:
This is the most widely used method.
The cabinet quantity is rounded up directly, making the final screen slightly larger than the design size. The excess area is usually covered with aluminum composite panels or stainless-steel decorative framing.
If the dimensional deviation is too large, you can switch to another cabinet size.
Actual width:
Actual height:
This solution fits the target dimensions more closely, but it increases the total cabinet quantity.
Another option is to customize edge cabinets.
For example:
The last cabinet column can be customized to 240 mm width.
| Target Width | Horizontal Cabinets | Actual Width | Target Height | Vertical Cabinets | Actual Height | Total Cabinets |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3 m | 4 | 3840 mm | 2 m | 3 | 2880 mm | 12 |
| 4 m | 5 | 4800 mm | 3 m | 4 | 3840 mm | 20 |
| 5 m | 6 | 5760 mm | 3 m | 4 | 3840 mm | 24 |
| 6 m | 7 | 6720 mm | 4 m | 5 | 4800 mm | 35 |
| 8 m | 9 | 8640 mm | 5 m | 6 | 5760 mm | 54 |
| 10 m | 11 | 10560 mm | 6 m | 7 | 6720 mm | 77 |
For outdoor front-service LED displays, verify whether the cabinet thickness allows enough maintenance space for front access.
Typical cabinet weights:
Each cabinet typically consumes:
Total power consumption determines:
A single receiving card usually supports:
Therefore, the cabinet quantity directly affects the control system configuration.
There is typically a:
gap between adjacent cabinets. Engineers should reserve tolerance for these seams when calculating the final screen dimensions.
