How to Calculate LED Display Cabinet Quantity

15-May-2026 05:42:45

In an LED display system, the cabinet (also called a cabinet unit) is the standardized structural unit positioned between the LED module and the complete screen. Calculating cabinet quantity is one of the most important steps in project quotation, structural design, and installation planning.

1. Core Calculation Formula

Basic Formula

Horizontal Cabinet Quantity

Nw=Screen WidthCabinet WidthN_w = \left\lceil \frac{\text{Screen Width}}{\text{Cabinet Width}} \right\rceil

Vertical Cabinet Quantity

Nh=Screen HeightCabinet HeightN_h = \left\lceil \frac{\text{Screen Height}}{\text{Cabinet Height}} \right\rceil

Total Cabinet Quantity

Ntotal=Nw×NhN_{total} = N_w \times N_hNtotal=Nw×Nh

Note:
The symbol x\lceil x \rceil⌈x⌉ means rounding up because cabinets cannot be divided into partial units.

2. Common LED Cabinet Sizes

Cabinet TypeTypical SizeCommon Pixel PitchTypical Applications
Die-cast aluminum cabinet500 × 500 mm / 500 × 1000 mmP2.6 / P2.9 / P3.9Rental displays, stage screens
Die-cast aluminum cabinet640 × 480 mmP1.5 / P1.8 / P2 / P2.5Fine-pitch fixed installations
Steel cabinet960 × 960 mmP4 / P5 / P6 / P8 / P10Outdoor fixed LED billboards
Steel cabinet768 × 768 mmP3 / P4 / P5Outdoor and semi-outdoor displays
Lightweight/simple cabinet480 × 480 mm / 512 × 512 mmP2.5 / P3 / P4Creative and irregular LED displays

3. Complete Calculation Example

Project Scenario

Build a 6 m × 4 m outdoor P5 advertising LED screen.

Known Parameters

Target Screen Size

  • Width: 6000 mm
  • Height: 4000 mm

Selected Cabinet

  • Cabinet size: 960 × 960 mm
  • Standard steel cabinet

LED Module

  • Module size: 320 × 160 mm
  • Each cabinet contains:
    • 3 modules horizontally
    • 6 modules vertically

So each cabinet contains:3×6=18 modules3 \times 6 = 18 \text{ modules}

Step 1: Calculate Horizontal Cabinet Quantity

6000960=6.25=7\left\lceil \frac{6000}{960} \right\rceil = \left\lceil 6.25 \right\rceil = 7

Therefore:7 cabinets horizontally7 \text{ cabinets horizontally}

Step 2: Calculate Vertical Cabinet Quantity

4000960=4.17=5\left\lceil \frac{4000}{960} \right\rceil = \left\lceil 4.17 \right\rceil = 5

Therefore:5 cabinets vertically5 \text{ cabinets vertically}

Step 3: Calculate Total Cabinet Quantity

7×5=357 \times 5 = 35

So the project requires:35 cabinets35 \text{ cabinets}

Step 4: Calculate Actual Screen Size

Actual Width

7×960=6720 mm7 \times 960 = 6720 \text{ mm}

Actual Height

5×960=4800 mm5 \times 960 = 4800 \text{ mm}

So the final installed screen size becomes:

  • Width: 6720 mm
  • Height: 4800 mm

Step 5: Calculate the Size Difference

Width Difference

67206000=720 mm6720 – 6000 = 720 \text{ mm}

Height Difference

48004000=800 mm4800 – 4000 = 800 \text{ mm}

The final screen is therefore larger than the original target dimensions.

How to Calculate LED Display Cabinet Quantity

4. Calculating Module Quantity from Cabinet Quantity

Each cabinet contains a fixed number of LED modules.

Cabinet SizeModule SizeHorizontal ModulesVertical ModulesTotal Modules per Cabinet
960 × 960 mm320 × 160 mm3618
640 × 480 mm320 × 160 mm236
500 × 500 mm250 × 250 mm224
500 × 1000 mm250 × 250 mm248

Using the previous example:35 cabinets×18 modules=630 modules35 \text{ cabinets} \times 18 \text{ modules} = 630 \text{ modules}

Therefore, the complete LED display requires:630 LED modules630 \text{ LED modules}

5. Three Common Engineering Solutions

Strategy 1: Round Up by Standard Cabinet Size (Most Common)

This is the most widely used method.

The cabinet quantity is rounded up directly, making the final screen slightly larger than the design size. The excess area is usually covered with aluminum composite panels or stainless-steel decorative framing.

Advantages

  • Standardized structure
  • Easier maintenance
  • Faster installation
  • Lower cost

Strategy 2: Change Cabinet Size

If the dimensional deviation is too large, you can switch to another cabinet size.

Example: Using 768 × 768 mm Cabinets

Horizontal Quantity

6000768=8\left\lceil \frac{6000}{768} \right\rceil = 8

Actual width:8×768=6144 mm8 \times 768 = 6144 \text{ mm}

Vertical Quantity

4000768=6\left\lceil \frac{4000}{768} \right\rceil = 6

Actual height:6×768=4608 mm6 \times 768 = 4608 \text{ mm}

Total Cabinets

8×6=488 \times 6 = 48

This solution fits the target dimensions more closely, but it increases the total cabinet quantity.

Strategy 3: Custom Non-Standard Cabinets

Another option is to customize edge cabinets.

For example:60006×960=240 mm6000 – 6 \times 960 = 240 \text{ mm}

The last cabinet column can be customized to 240 mm width.

Advantages

  • Precise final dimensions
  • Cleaner architectural integration

Disadvantages

  • Higher manufacturing cost
  • Non-standard spare parts
  • More difficult maintenance

7. Important Engineering Considerations

Maintenance Access

For outdoor front-service LED displays, verify whether the cabinet thickness allows enough maintenance space for front access.

Weight Calculation

Total Weight=Single Cabinet Weight×Cabinet Quantity\text{Total Weight} = \text{Single Cabinet Weight} \times \text{Cabinet Quantity}

Typical cabinet weights:

  • Aluminum cabinet: approximately 12–18 kg
  • Steel cabinet: approximately 25–35 kg

Power Distribution

Each cabinet typically consumes:200 W400 W200\text{ W} \sim 400\text{ W}

Total power consumption determines:

  • Circuit breaker specifications
  • Power cable size
  • Distribution cabinet requirements

Receiving Card Loading Capacity

A single receiving card usually supports:24 cabinets2 \sim 4 \text{ cabinets}

Therefore, the cabinet quantity directly affects the control system configuration.

Cabinet Gaps

There is typically a:12 mm1 \sim 2 \text{ mm}

gap between adjacent cabinets. Engineers should reserve tolerance for these seams when calculating the final screen dimensions.
